I have considerable experience as a professional photographer at the BBC, New Zealand Television and as a University Senior lecturer in UK.
About my current practice
My practice has led me to a point in my life where I am able to draw on this experience to freely explore a broad range of themes, issues and processes to create new personal imagery. However, observation of culture through whatever means are available, remains the bedrock of my inspiration and creative direction.
My photographic practice can be divided up into three main linked categories.
Unlikely partnerships: As a means of generating and enriching the creative mind, my practical and novel approach explores how semiotic meaning associated with common objects can be subverted into new unexpected meanings. This is generated by forcing a new alliance or partnership between two or more objects from differing or unlikely ‘families’ through a randomized selection process. Humour is often generated, that holds the attention of the viewer. It is a gymnasium of the mind.
Erotica: In a culture now rampant with commodity fetishism, there is an increasing demand, constructed between advertiser and consumer, for new brands and products to be made visually or erotically charged to gain market prominence. These false narratives employ the use of the semiotic concept of intertextuality to trigger erotic thoughts in the minds of the consumer. In my approach the mundane origins and psychological are deliberately confused, thus both making work that is unexpected and ambiguous, but erotically
charged.
Experimentation: This category is an important component to my work, and one I enjoy most of all, as it feeds the other two. I see no boundaries, as I am able to freely employ a wide range of media and methods readily at hand. I accept all ideas on board. Often the most challenging and even absurd manifest themselves at night when my insomnia kicks in. That’s when I get to work. Using digital and physical means it’s perhaps like practical brainstorming.
If you go to my website and like any of my images you can obtain signed artist’s editions of selected imagery maybe purchased as archival prints by email request to [email protected].
